Manager Mastery: A 13-Week Journey into Better Leadership

Good leadership is built over time, shaped by reflection, clarity, and the way we support our people. Manager Mastery at Kovai.co was a 13-week leadership enhancement journey designed to strengthen how managers lead, influence, and grow their teams. Through shared learning and practical experiences, managers and team leads explored how their actions influence team culture, trust, and outcomes. It brought together managers from across teams to understand themselves better, gain deeper insights into their teams, and learn how leadership shapes our Kovai.co culture.

Pradeep Jumani, Chief People Officer, the host says,

We initiated the Managerial Mastery sessions because great employee experience is built or broken by people managers. As we grow, we wanted to invest early in strengthening people leadership, decision-making, and everyday managerial behaviours that directly shape culture, trust, and performance.

The Beginning – Ignite & Reflect

The program began with light, hands-on activities using marshmallows, spaghetti sticks, and a few other simple materials – exercises that surprisingly connected back to real leadership situations. Through these activities, our people managers revisited their shift from individual contributors to people leaders. They reflected on how their responsibilities had grown, how their approach influenced team culture, and how leadership is more about empowerment than execution.

This first phase was a moment to pause, reflect, and realign before moving deeper into the journey, with a few sessions led by Poornima Sulur Tamilmani, Technical Program Manager.

Mithun Kandasamy, QA Manager, says,

A key learning was knowing when to step back, enable ownership, and avoid taking the ‘monkey on the back,’ while better understanding what motivates individuals at different stages.

Leadership Conversations: Sharing Real Experiences

As the journey continued, managers took part in a dedicated space for open conversations. These discussions allowed them to speak about the real challenges they faced, from communication gaps to tough decisions, and to understand how their peers navigated similar situations.

Edison Johnson, Lead Creative Designer, says,

The real-world discussions were especially valuable, helping turn complex situations into clear, practical takeaways. Since the program, I lead with more clarity and confidence, without feeling the need to have all the answers. The interactive conversations were a quiet highlight throughout.

Awareness & Empower – Understanding the Team

Another important part of the program focused on team awareness. Our people managers explored how team dynamics shifted once they moved into leadership positions. It helped in translating expectations, guiding different working styles, and supporting the emotional landscape of a team played a crucial role in performance.

This phase helped managers see leadership as a balance of clarity, understanding, and consistent communication.

DRIVE – Leading with Direction

The final stage of the program brought everything together. Managers worked on defining goals, setting direction, and enabling their teams to achieve meaningful outcomes. They revisited the employee lifecycle, discussed case studies, and explored new trends shaping the future of work.

Continuous feedback, development planning, and handling difficult conversations were key focus areas that aimed at helping managers lead with impact.

The practical guidance around setting clear expectations and addressing conflicts early has made my day-to-day decisions more confident and effective. The program strengthened my ability to lead with clarity, handle challenges proactively, and drive outcomes through people rather than processes.

A Step Forward Together

The Manager Mastery Program was more than a series of sessions. It became a shared learning experience – one that strengthened our leadership culture across the organisation. By focusing on self-awareness, team understanding, and structured ways of guiding performance, we created space for managers to grow not just in responsibility but in perspective.

With this journey, we took another step towards building leaders who shape teams with clarity, care, and purpose – the Kovai.co way.
